His next album was Hot Buttered Soul , which was released in 1969 after Stax had gone through a major upheaval. The label had lost its largest star, Otis Redding , in a plane crash in December 1967. Stax lost all of its back catalog to Atlantic Records in May 1968. As a result, Stax executive vice president Al Bell called for 27 new albums to be completed in mid-1969; Hot Buttered Soul , was the most successful of these releases. [9]

Sir Isaac Newton (25 Dec 1642 – 20 Mar 1727) - Born the year Galileo died, Sir Isaac Newton is considered one of the greatest scientists who ever lived. He had a profound impact on astronomy, physics, and mathematics. Born prematurely on Christmas day and after his father’s death, his mother eventually remarried and abandoned him to grandparents. This would impact him for the rest of his life, causing him great insecurity. Fortunately, somewhere down the road, an uncle recognized his scholarly talents so Newton eventually made it to Trinity College in Cambridge. Among his many achievements was the invention of the telescope; the invention of calculus; the revelation of the three laws of motion; and the development of the law of universal gravitation. His contribution to science was almost insurmountable.

Alongside the likes of James Brown, George Clinton, Kool & The Gang and Michael Jackson, Isaac Hayes appears on a list of names responsible in no small amount for shaping the sound of contemporary music: the most sampled artists of all time. His work having been sampled over 1000 times, Isaac Hayes sits comfortably within the Top 20 all time most sampled artists and is one of just a handful of the most sampled soul voices. The influence of his work is far reaching with samples having been repurposed by artists ranging from Bristol trip-hop trailblazers Portishead and Massive Attack to southern rap pioneers The Geto Boys. His influence on hip hop is, of course, enormous - the list of artists to have sampled the Hayes catalog reads like a who’s who of the last two decades’ hip hop hot makers: Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Kanye, Wu-Tang, 2 Pac all featured.

Whilst Isaac’s solo work is his most heavily sampled, his work as a producer is no less influential. The Charmels’ ‘As Long As I’ve Got You’, both penned and produced by Hayes together with David Porter forms the backbone of Wu-Tang Clan’s iconic ‘’, one of the most iconic hip hop samples of all time. Similarly, The Emotions’ ‘I Like It’, also produced by Hayes, underpins ODB’s club smash ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’. Many an anthem has started life as a loop of a Hayes riff and his presence has been consistent from the rudimentary sample based cuts of the 80s to sophisticated pop productions of today.

The following playlist explores the influence of tracks from the Spirit of Memphis compilation, highlighting some of the best loved samples to have sampled them, among them timeless tracks from artists incuding Notorious BIG, Mary J Blige and J Dilla:
